Apple in Trouble After High-Profile iCloud Hack

apple-hackintosh.png

Apple is now in deep trouble after its cloud service iCloud was mercilessly hacked and then used to victimize  none other than WIRED Magazine news writer Matt Honan.

Instead of getting fancy….the hackers simply called Apple and deceived them into giving them a “temporary password”

Password in hand, the hackers exploited iCloud security holes,  and retrieved Matt’s Google and Twitter passwords. Then, they simply exploited vulnerabilities in Apple’s Find My iPhone and Find My Mac  apps.  One they gained remote access, the hackers wasted no time in completely erasing contents in Matt’s iPhone, iPad, and MacBook Air.

Google also got into the hacking tangle, when the hackers, hungry for more, deleted his Google and Gmail account.

So, why would a perfectly friend tech writer get hacked? It’s assumed that the hackers ( still not identified ) broke into Honan’s iCloud in order to get access to Honan’s massive 15K Twitter followers.

hackersIt didn’t stop there… the hackers also realized that Honan had linked his Twitter account to Gizmodo’s account…. they were able to send spam tweets to some 415,000 people…

Amazon also got a nasty surprise…. the hacker was able to get the temporary password by accessing Amazon’s file of Matt’s Credit Card number; thus the hacker was able to get Apple into thinking that the request for the password was legitimate.

Apple Loses Against HTC in Patent War

Having won consecutive injunctions against both Samsung and HTC, iPhone and iPad maker Apple seemed to be rolling in victory. Things came to an abrupt end when London High Court Christopher Floyd sided against Apple.

The court ruled 3 of the 4 Apple patents as invalid. Apple was also defending its touch-screen technology patent, but the court ruled that HTC was not  infringing on Apple’s touch-screen patent.

HTC’s win comes as a damper to Apple’s string of legal wins…many against Motorola and some even versus Microsoft. Too often Cupertino is guilty of pursuing trivial issues in its legal battles and this case is just one example.

Apple is expected to continue its legal wars against Motorola, Microsoft, HTC, and Samsung. So far, the results from these wars have been less than positive… and amounting too little results.

Report: Apple Fan Boy Praises Windows Phone over iPhone

imageMicrosoft is proudly reporting that an Apple Fan boy dumped his iPhone in favor of a Windows Phone. Not only did he break ties with Cupertino, but the fan boy went one step further and wrote a letter to Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. He sung Windows Phone praises and eventually put his money to action and bought a Nokia Lumia 900. Here is the letter in its entirety…mind you, this is an Apple fan who took to the pen and paper to laud Windows Phone.

Mr. Ballmer,

Hopefully this will get to you. Your team deserves credit for producing an excellent product in the newest version of Windows Phone. Yes, I am writing from my MacBook Pro. And I have been a fairly loyal Apple customer over the years. However, I recently bought a Nokia Lumia 900 and intend on keeping it. For full disclosure, I was sure to make sure it could be returned after a dismal experience with an Android phone.
My reasons for switching are:

  1. Call quality. I actually use my phone as a phone. That concept seems to get lost in many product reviews. One of my employees actually thanked me for getting rid of my iPhone as it was so much easier to hear me. I apologize for the tedium but it means a great deal to me and my business.
  2. Simplicity. My family owns five vehicles, including two Fords with Sync. The 4S didn’t support all functions in any of them. My Nokia 900 was flawless out of the box. It was refreshing to have something that just worked. I cannot afford to have my primary means of communication be a science experiment.
  3. No junk software. Speaking of science experiments, I also tried a Motorola Razr. Software that cannot be deleted and restarts itself? A company with questionable privacy rules. Software that terrified my poor in-laws? I guess if you like spending your day tinkering with your phone, it’s pretty cool. Maybe it beats playing with your Star Wars dolls?
  4. Simplicity again. Everything after set up has been painless as well. Adding apps, setting up email accounts, etc. I thought the iPhone was good. Your set up was actually smoother and took less time. Same for Wi-Fi, in-car Bluetooth, etc.
  5. Speed. The 900 doesn’t seem to lag the way the iPhone did at times. Everything seems to execute quickly. That I don’t think about it is probably the best compliment.
  6. Live Tiles. It’s a minor thing but the Metro tiles are pretty cool. I just like the look.

Best regards,
Scott G.
