.NET

.net official logoEasy Definition: Software network that aids in software programming

Detailed Definition: .NET is a software framework which aids in software programming by becoming a specialized software environment consisting of CLR ( Common Language Runtime) and class libraries in Windows.

History:

In the Late 1990s, Microsoft started developing the .net framework in preparation for more serious operating systems. Early development was called Next Generation Windows Services (NGWS). Since then, Microsoft has included the .Net framework with all versions of Windows.  The latest version is 4.5. ( Release Candidate)
Developer:  Microsoft Corporation

What Does it Do?

.NET is responsible for many things throughout the computer. Without it, software and software installation wouldn’t work properly

INSTALLATION-   .NET allows for Windows to correctly uninstall programs

PROGRAMS-   .NET is responsible for maintaining a high-level security environment for all programs

DEVELOPMENT-  It allows all developers to benefit from class libraries

MEMORY MANAGEMENT-  It handles memory for programs

Where can I Find .NET ?

.NET comes in every version of Windows ( not XP). Users usually  just recognize the installed updates or patches to .NET versions already running on their computer. Full OS and Service packs to the OS already include .NET.

  1. Windows Vista SP1 comes with .NET Framework 2.0 SP1, 3.0 SP1.

2.    Windows Vista SP2comes with .NET Framework 2.0 SP2, 3.0 SP2 .

3.    Windows 7 comes with.NET Framework 2.0 SP2, 3.0 SP2 and 3.5 SP1

How Does it Work?

The heart and engine of the .NET Framework is the Common Language Runtime. All programs that run on .NET are able to take advantage of the Framework Class Library (FCL)

NET Framework works with hundreds of running components and Windows libraries to a create an entire framework.

..It works by updating the already existing components….

Updates to the .NET already in Windows are serviced by something called DUAL BRANCH SERVICING. The first branch is GDR and the second is LDR.

Technologies based on .NET

Microsoft has based many tools and technologies  on .NET technology, including the following:

  • .NET Compact Framework—this is the framework for Windows Compact Embedded
  • Visual Studio- all versions of Visual Studio since 2002 have required .NET Framework
